How to Make Delicious Tropical Guava Butter Spread
If you’re a fan of the tropical flavor of guavas, you’re in for a real treat! Guava butter is a delicious spread made from fresh guavas that are cooked with sugar, and then mixed into softened butter. It’s sweet, tangy, and creamy in texture – perfect for spreading onto toasted sourdough bread!
WHAT IS GUAVA BUTTER?
Guava butter is a delicious spread made by combining softened butter with guavas that have been pureed, sweetened with sugar, and cooked down to a jam-like consistency.
Guava butter makes a beautiful edible gift and is a popular topping for bread, toast, pancakes, and waffles. It can also be used as an ingredient in baking recipes. If you’re looking to add some sweetness to your life, check out my full lineup of dessert recipes!
WHY I LOVE THIS RECIPE
- Quick and easy: Guava butter is incredibly easy to make, requiring just four simple ingredients: butter, guavas, lemon, and sugar. My favorite way to eat it is on toast.

INGREDIENTS YOU’LL NEED
- Guavas: I used pink guavas from my mom’s tree, but yellow guavas will also work for this recipe as long as they are ripe and somewhat soft.
- Sugar: My preference is always pure cane sugar, but any granulated sugar will work.
- Lemon: I use one lemon for this recipe, juice and zest.
- Butter: Softened, at room temperature.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
1. Blend and strain guavas
- Using a sharp knife, cut off the tips of each guava.
- Add guavas to blender canister with just enough water to get the blender going, about 1/2 cup, and process until smooth on low setting, about 30 seconds.
- Strain out seeds by pressing the puree through a fine mesh sieve using a spatula or spoon.
2. Cook guava puree
- Add guava puree, lemon zest and juice, and sugar to a small pot and cook over medium heat until the mixture has thickened to a jam-like consistency, for about 15 to 20 minutes, over medium heat.
- Stir frequently to avoid scorching the bottom of the guava puree.
- Once ready, remove from heat and allow to cool completely.
3. Combine guava mixture with butter
- Next, add butter and guava mixture to a glass bowl and using a spatula or spoon, mix until ingredients are well incorporated.
4. Serve and enjoy
- Serve at room temperature for easy spreadability.
- Refrigerate leftover guava butter in an airtight container.
TIPS, TRICKS, AND SUBSTITUTIONS
- Seed removal: While some people enjoy the rustic texture of guava butter with seeds, I prefer a smoother consistency. To remove seeds, strain the cooked guava mixture through a fine-mesh sieve.
- Sweetness: Adjust the sweetness to your preference by adding more or less sugar. You can also use honey, agave, or maple syrup for a natural sweetness.
- Variations: Experiment with different spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, vanilla, or cloves to add complexity to your guava butter.
WHAT TO PAIR WITH GUAVA BUTTER
- Breakfast: Pancakes, waffles, French toast, biscuits, bagels, and scones.
- Bread: Apple bread, persimmon bread, cornbread, dinner rolls, or sourdough bread.
- Grilled meats: Chicken, shrimp, pork, or salmon.
