Rich Chocolate Mole Smoothie, A New Spin on Traditional Flavors
If you love the complex, savory-sweet flavors of traditional Mexican mole, you have to try it in drink form! This chocolate mole drink combines rich Mexican chocolate, almonds, cinnamon, and a subtle kick of spice all in one smoothie. It’s ready in 5 minutes!

With busy schedules, I’m always looking for quick and creative smoothie combinations. This malteada is inspired by a mole cupcake and mole ice cream I once tasted. I love drawing inspiration from Mexican regional foods to create unique desserts.
INGREDIENTS YOU’LL NEED
The ingredients are pretty straightforward, but you may have to track down a good mole sauce. For this recipe, I use black mole paste sold by the Oaxacan restaurant, Guelaguetza. You’ll also need milk (whole, almond, rice, oat, or coconut milk will work), oatmeal, pecans, almonds, cinnamon, dates, a banana, cocoa powder and ice.

HOW TO MAKE THIS RECIPE
If someone could transform traditional mole sauce into a cupcake flavor, I could take the same idea and apply it to a smoothie, right? Well, without adding chicken broth to turn it into a sauce, the basic ingredients in certain mole recipes can be quite sweet. I simply enhanced those flavors to create a mildly sweet smoothie with a hint of chocolate and spice.
Blend ingredients
- Combine mole paste, milk, oats, nuts, cinnamon, dates, cocoa powder, banana, and ice and blend for 60 seconds, or until completely smooth. Garnish with raw cacao nibs and sesame seeds, if desired and enjoy immediately.

💡FUN FACT: Mole negro (ingredients displayed in photo) is the mother of moles and is one of the most labor-intensive of the sauces to make. It contains over 25 ingredients and is a true representation of the Columbian Exchange, where flavors of the Old World meet the New World.

Such a great idea!!! This is the ultimate superfood smoothie (lots of nuts, chocolate, and spices.)
Precisely! The mole paste itself is somewhat sweet, with a hint of spice, which is a perfect combination in this smoothie.
Wow, I’m really curious about trying this. Never would’ve thought about this in a million years, that’s for sure!
I wouldn’t have thought it could work either, but when I heard that there was a tamal con mole cupcake — I had to try this smoothie! It’s delicious.
OMG now I want a tamal con mole cupcake!!
I do, too. The tamal de mole cupcake was inspired by a tamal de elote cupcake (both by Viva los Cupcakes). She has so many fun flavors inspired by Mexico!
