Homemade Guacamole

guacamole casero: mexican guacamole

This week, I am sharing a fresh guacamole recipe that highlights several Mexican superfoods including tomatoes, chiles, and avocados. The basic recipe below is the same one that my mom, sisters, and I have always made. Sometimes I like to experiment and add cubed apple, fresh pomegranate seeds, pumpkin seeds, or crispy jicama for interesting texture and flavor!

Recipe by Lola

Ingredients:
2 large ripe avocados
2 cloves garlic minced
¼ medium red onion diced
1 jalapeño or serrano chile diced
1 medium firm tomato diced into small cubes
½ bunch cilantro
½ lemon or 1 lime freshly squeezed
Salt (to taste)

Preparation:

  1. Cut avocado in half lengthwise and remove pit (save one though). Spoon out avocado and add to bowl. Mash with fork until it is somewhat smooth or roughly chop with a knife if you prefer it chunky.
  2. Mix in garlic, red onion, jalapeño, tomato and cilantro.
  3. Squeeze lemon or lime juice over mixture and season with salt.
  4. Mix one last time, and add pit to prevent browning. Keep guacamole covered and refrigerated until ready to serve.
