{COMADRES CORNER} Interview with Ariadna Vásquez, Co-Founder of Oaxaca’s Central de Diseño and Almacén Mexicano

Ariadna Vásquez is as unique as her name and it is only fitting that she is from one of Mexico’s cultural jewels, as she is a gem herself. I had the pleasure of meeting Ari in 2012 while conducting my graduate research in Oaxaca. As fate would have it, our paths crossed and we connected immediately. We both love Mexican culture and food and enjoy chatting about all of our crazy business ideas.

Ari co-founded a boutique design and marketing firm, Central de Diseño, and works with clients in both Mexico and the U.S. We share an eye and appreciation for branding with a Mexican twist, which is why she takes the lead on all of the marketing materials for Lola’s Cocina and Lola’s Mercadito.

When Ari isn’t working as a graphic designer, she manages Almacén Mexicano, a hip new shop she also co-founded that specializes in handmade artesanías, clothing, and accessories from the nearby villages and local designers.

Since meeting, Ari and I have collaborated on several projects and both of our small businesses have blossomed. Technology and Facebook messenger have made maintaining our cross-border working relationship and friendship quite seamless. I very much look forward to my annual visits to Oaxaca, catching up with Ari, and being immersed in the culture and region that breathes life into Lola’s Cocina. ¡Hasta pronto!

INTERVIEW WITH ARIADNA VÁSQUEZ
Tell us about Central de Diseño and Almacén Mexicano. What was the initial inspiration for you to launch these businesses?

What factors do you believe have helped contribute to your success as a business owner?

What is one of your proudest accomplishments as a business owner?

What challenges do you currently face as a business owner?

What are three of your favorite graphic design projects?

What are three products at Almacén Mexicano that you think people should know about and what makes them interesting?

ABOUT ARIADNA VÁSQUEZ: CO-FOUNDER OF CENTRAL DE DISEÑO & ALMACÉN MEXICANO
Walk us through a typical day in your shoes.

Besides working for yourself, what do you enjoy about being your own boss?

Please share three goals you would like to accomplish in 2017 (they can be personal or relate to your business).

FUN FACTS
What’s one of your favorite Mexican dishes?
¡Tlayuda!

Where is your favorite hole-in-the-wall to eat in Oaxaca?

When you’re not working as a graphic designer or running Almacén Mexicano, what do you like to do for fun?

What’s one of your favorite Mexican sayings or quotes?
