Today the streets of Los Angeles are abuzz. The city is experiencing a renaissance, and one of the main culprits behind this revival is its dynamic food scene. Its food is as varied as the ethnic groups that make up the great city of L.A. and its mobile food scene is equally as impressive.

Growing up in Southern California, I used to spend a lot of time in Downtown L.A.’s Fashion District with my grandma Lola and my mother. We’d search high and low for the best deals in town every holiday season and it was on one of these shopping adventures that we fell upon the best hot dog recipes to hit the streets of L.A.: the bacon wrapped hot dog. After a long day of wheeling and dealing with vendors, we most definitely worked up an appetite and would indulge in a curbside bacon-wrapped hot dog, soda, and chips. It was impossible to avoid getting messy – these hot dogs are loaded with grilled onions, bell peppers, jalapeños, and then topped with ketchup, mayonnaise, and mustard. They should come with wet wipes to clean up afterwards!

I reminisce about those dirty dogs now that I’m 1,000 miles away in Colorado. Since I can no longer hop in my grandma’s blue Cadillac and head to Downtown L.A. at the drop of a hat, I had to recreate these flavors at home. In order to cut back on the calories, I substituted regular bacon with turkey bacon and swapped out my hot dog bun with FlatOut’s 5 Grain Flax Folded Flatbread (it’s only 90 calories total!).
