DIY Fiesta Favors: Bedazzled Lotería Match Boxes

DIY Loteria Match Boxes | Lola's Cocina

April has been a month full of love and festivities in honor of my best friend Corinne’s upcoming wedding. We kicked off the month with a weekend getaway in beautiful Santa Barbara, California with 22 of Corinne’s nearest and dearest gal pals and then the following weekend we reconvened for her fiesta-themed bridal shower.

Once I caught wind of the shower’s theme, the creative juices in my mind were ignited and I immediately began working on these practical and festive matchboxes to complement the table settings and decor. Everyone in attendance raved about the colorful Lotería matchboxes as they tucked them away into their handbags.

They were the perfect addition to the shower and are an easy and inexpensive recuerdo to make for any fiesta. Cheers to stoking the passions of love – ¡que viva el amor!

Supplies:
Small match boxes size 2 x 1.5 inches
Lotería game sheets
Scissors
Small paint brushes
Mod Podge (I used the gloss-lustre finish, but any one will work)
Glue
Bedazzling options: colorful sequins, loose chunky glitter, glitter pens, fabric glitter, chunky glitter nail polish)
Toothpick

Instructions:

  1. Cut individual images from Lotería game sheets into small rectangles.
  2. Working one at a time, brush a layer of Mod Podge onto each match box and carefully apply a Lotería image on top. If the edges begin to curl up, simply press them down with the opposite end of the paint brush.
  3. Add another layer of Mod Podge to the top of each match box (over the image) and press down the sides if necessary. Set aside and allow to dry. This will add a glossy finish to the Lotería images.
  4. Decorate with different types of sequins or glitter.

If working with sequins: apply glue to the edges of each match box. Dip the tip of your toothpick in the glue in order to pick up individual sequins and press them firmly onto the match box, one at a time. Set aside and allow to dry completely.

If working with loose glitter: apply glue to the edges of each match box. Sprinkle glitter onto the glue, and shake off any excess glitter. Be sure to place a piece of paper underneath to catch any excess glitter you may want to recycle. Set aside and allow to dry completely.

If working with glitter pens, fabric glitter, or chunky glitter nail polish: Apply a thick coat of glitter around the edges of each match box. Set aside and allow to dry completely. You may have to repeat this process one or two more times until the glitter is to your liking.

Prepare supplies in advance to avoid taking breaks in between layers of Mod Podge.

Here are a few different glitter options: fabric glitter, chunky loose glitter, and chunky glitter nail polish. Glitter pens also work well, although you have to add multiple layers.

And I bedazzled these with colorful sequins.

I like to mix and match my bedazzling options and add a sequin or two near the image as well.
